Hobby Hangar Hop

Despite the shorter hours in preparation for the evening's Hobby Hangar Hop, this was a fun-filled and busy Wings & Wheels event! We opened the doors later, at 11:00am, when we welcomed South Houston High School's Class of 1969 to the museum to celebrate their 40th year high school reunion!

Many of these alums brought classic cars to commemorate the event and had them on display out in front of the museum. On the ramp side of the museum, we were light on aircraft and only displayed the museum's 1942 Lockheed Lodestar, the Cessna Bobcat on loan to the museum, and, of course, the 1958 Cessna 175 SkyLark Raffle Plane, which could be yours when we give it away next year! Many of the volunteers were busy dividing their attention between the daytime event and preparing our hangar for the evening's event, so we operated the ramp on an escort-only basis. However, this actually worked out for the better as guests were able to get a guided tour of each of the aircraft on display, as well as the B-17G Flying Fortress "Texas Raiders", which was recently restored by the Gulf Coast Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. Guests were also treated to a preview screening of the new movie, 'Barnstorming', with the producers and director of the movie on-hand to introduce the film and answer any questions.

The evening's Hobby Hangar Hop event went off without a hitch! At 6:00p, more than 150 people started gathering at our hangar to enjoy the sounds of The Houstonian Big Band, featuring Tianna Hall on vocals.

A lot of dancing and conversation commenced with the aforementioned 'Texas Raiders' as a backdrop. At around 7:00p, a delicious barbecue dinner from Central Texas Bar-B-Q was served, and guests were treated to the Houston premier screening of 'Barnstorming'. Once again, the director and producers were on-hand to introduce the film and answer any questions. After the movie finished, the conductor once again struck up the band and guests danced the night away to many big band hits. Stay tuned to our website to see when the next event will take place!
