HoustonSpotters and museum volunteer appreciation day
December has traditionally been a slow month for Wings & Wheels due to the holidays, so we decide to have a month where we don't plan a huge event, but instead activities for photographers and volunteers, giving the volunteers a chance to enjoy the museum instead of having to work.
HoustonSpotters.net is a website dedicated to planespotting in the Houston area. Many people enjoy aviation photography, and HoustonSpotters gives them a place to come together and share their interests and discuss issues related to Houston and aviation. With this in mind, in December, we have traditionally arranged for Hobby airport operations to escort groups of photographers, and whoever else they have room for, out to the side of the runway where they can get up close to the action. This type of access is not normally permitted, so it is a rare opportunity for some great shots.
Unfortunately, due to the weather, we were not able to have escorted photo tours this year.
Inside, museum volunteer Michael Bludworth held his annual trivia game for root beers! He displays photos of planes or airports, and asks a question about it. Every correct answer gets you one root beer!
We also had one special visitor in the atrium. We got an official visit from Santa! Many kids lined up to talk to Santa and have their photo taken. Even the museum volunteers got together for a photo!
