Wings and Wheels 2015

THANK YOU to everyone who came out in 2015 in support of our mission. While we had some bad luck with the weather a few times, we made up for it with some great themes and events, welcoming back Houston Vintage, as well as the Airliner Collectible Show.

We even had our own mini airshow with several planes doing low passes on runway 17 complete with smoke! We grew our volunteer core, as well as our event revenues, and of course gave away another airplane, our 8th plane to date!

Come on by the 1940 Air Terminal Museum at Houston Hobby Airport on Saturday, April 18 and join us for another Wings and Wheels. It’s Spring Stretch Your Wings Day!

May

Ercoupe Rodeo take two and Learn to fly day! (5-16-2015)

This month we will once again welcome the Ercoupes to Houston!

Join us as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Ercoupe! We have a large group of Ercoupes confirmed, along with the Houston Mini motoring society, weather permitting.

Many people from all walks of life learn to fly every day. It is a very fun and challenging hobby, or can be made into a career!

The EAA announced International Learn to Fly Day in 2009 with the aim of growing the pilot population and educating the public about the importance and value of the airports in their communities. Many people don't know what it takes to earn their wings. For many, flying is only something one daydreams about, because it is such an unknown, and it is up to pilots to invite others 'across the fence' and show them what it is all about. Airports as well are great unknowns, but they serve us and our communities - they are ours to visit too!

For Learn to Fly Day, we're inviting area flight schools and flying clubs to visit the original terminal building at Hobby Airport and help us remove the mystery about becoming a pilot.

June

Aviation Hobbies Day (6-20-2015)

It's Aviation Hobby Day at Hobby Airport! We will be highlighting another pastime that the world of aviation has for us to enjoy.

Not only that... this month we're shaking our collective fists at the weather and bringing our visiting aircraft indoors for your viewing pleasure!

The South Houston Area Radio Control Society is a haven for both fixed-wing and rotary-wing radio-controlled aircraft enthusiasts and meets regularly at Tom Bass Regional Park. Their airfield has miniature paved and grass runways, so you can enjoy your investment and build your skills to your heart's content. SHARCS is intent on helping you enjoy your hobby by providing instructors to beginner pilots, and ensuring the safe operation of all aircraft. "If you can fly it, hover it, glide it or drive it, we have an area for you to enjoy it!"

SHARCS, charter club 3271 of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, will be displaying aircraft in various stages of construction, so you can get an idea of the amount of work that goes into getting each piece ready to fly. They may be miniatures, but they ARE aircraft, and they are a significant investment of time, effort, skill and money. And they're cool!

July

Raffle day (7-18-2015)

This month our Raffle Plane takes center stage! It's Raffle Day! Join us as we draw the winner of the raffle plane.

Buy a ticket today, and you could be the lucky winner! You can buy them right here on the website, or stop by, or call us.

This is the eighth year we've given away an airplane! You could be our lucky winner!

August

General Aviation Day (8-15-2015)

Come on down to the 1940 Air Terminal Museum on August 15 to celebrate all things aviation!

It’s General Aviation Day! Today we will widen our sights to all the great things about General Aviation in Houston. Fly in and your plane becomes part of the display, as we make it possible for people to get up close to real planes and chat with real pilots – with a commercial airport as our backdrop. Any and all aircraft are welcome to our ramp (please contact us so we can expect you) where security-badged volunteers provide supervised access to the public. Just tell the nice folks on the radio you'd like to park at 'the old terminal' or 'the museum'. Hobby is a GA friendly airport, featuring Texas-sized hospitality!

September

Houston Vintage (9-19-2015)

Houston Vintage is an organization that brings together vintage vendors and enthusiasts from Houston and the surrounding areas.

It's an opportunity for all who love and live vintage to exchange idea, find some amazing treasures, learn through demos and lectures (style, dance and culture), and celebrate all that is vintage throughout the eras.

Red Tails Exhibit (11-17-2015 through 11-21-2015)

The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Squadron will welcome visitors at its RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit for this month's Wings & Wheels, as well as the week leading up to Wings & Wheels.

Put yourself in the cockpit and soar above the clouds in your own P-51C Mustang as you step inside a traveling immersion exhibit featuring the original film, RISE ABOVE, on a 160-degree panoramic screen in a 30-seat temperature-controlled movie theater. The RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit highlights the courage and determination of the Tuskegee Airmen, who overcame obstacles to train and fight as U.S. Army Air Corps pilots, and what it means to us 60 years later.

December

HoustonSpotters & Museum Volunteer Appreciation Day (12-19-2015)

This month we turn our attention to those who turn their attention to airplanes and airports. If you love planes, we are right there with you! A plane spotter can be anyone from the families who enjoy Hobby's public viewing areas, to folks who like to jot down tail numbers, to those who improve their own craft photographing these flying craft. Why do you like to look at planes? Maybe you love refining your photography techniques, and hope your shot is picked by a magazine or airline. Maybe you want to see how much of an airline's fleet you can see, and later compare notes with your fellow spotters. Maybe you just like watching these things take to the air, and share that enjoyment with your family.

HoustonSpotters.Net is a website dedicated to plane spotting in Houston.

HoustonSpotters day is all about plane spotting and photography. Ramp tours of Hobby will be arranged (based on time and availability of airport operations), and groups of people will be taken around the field to spot planes and take photos.

We also like to recognize the hard work our volunteers do all year for our museum, whether helping our monthly fly-ins come together, or staffing the museum the other 290-something days of the year.

Stop by the 1940 Air Terminal Museum at Houston Hobby Airport and let's see what flys in! We will have a few Ops tours scheduled so that you can see our great airport from a different angle. Be someone out standing in our field!
