It was on this day December 6, 1938 that the City of Houston stopped using Howard Hughes’ name on their Municipal Airport. According to guidelines for a federally funded airport, it could not be named for a living person. Originally named for Hughes on July 30th, following his record breaking flight around the world, the name would last for only 4 months. The City of Houston had purchased the privately owned air field in June of 1937.
