It’s Aviation Hobby Day at Hobby Airport! We will be highlighting another pastime that the world of aviation has for us to enjoy.
The South Houston Area Radio Control Society is a haven for both fixed-wing and rotary-wing radio-controlled aircraft enthusiasts and meets regularly at Tom Bass Regional Park. Their airfield has miniature paved and grass runways, so you can enjoy your investment and build your skills to your heart’s content. SHARCS is intent on helping you enjoy your hobby by providing instructors to beginner pilots, and ensuring the safe operation of all aircraft. “If you can fly it, hover it, glide it or drive it, we have an area for you to enjoy it!”
HoustonSpotters is an online community dedicated to providing resources to plane spotters in the Houston area. Plane spotting is a popular hobby, where enthusiasts either photograph aircraft or collect the tail numbers of aircraft they have seen. In partnership with FlightAware, we have created a custom flight tracking website that filters flights for heavy and special aircraft – which is usually what spotters want to photograph.
The HoustonSpotters.net website contains information about where you can spot at the various airports, the rules for spotting safely, as well as a Spotting 101 section which outlines basic aviation concepts for people new to the hobby or aviation in general.
Wings & Wheels affords one of the best ways to get close to aviation in Houston! You literally get to stand right next to an active taxiway with planes as large as a Boeing 757 taxiing by! Come by our table at Wings & Wheels to learn more!
And what better way to enjoy aviation than to spend your time volunteering at the Museum. We are always happy to welcome new volunteers to our crew so be sure and ask us how you can get involved
